Areola Restoration After Mastectomy: Reclaiming Your Body, One Detail at a Time
Breast cancer changes many things. The treatment, the surgery, the recovery - all of it demands courage that most people never imagined they would need. And then, when the hardest part is over, many women find themselves facing a quieter loss: looking in the mirror and not quite recognising themselves.
Areola restoration is the final chapter of that journey. It is a small procedure with a profound impact - and for many women, it is the moment t ey finally feel whole again.
What Is Areola Restoration?
Areola restoration (also called areola reconstruction or nipple-areola complex tattooing) is a paramedical micropigmentation procedure that recreates the appearance of the nipple and areola on the breast after mastectomy.
Using specialised pigments and techniques, a trained paramedical artist recreates:
The natural colour and tone of the areola
The subtle gradients and texture of the skin
The three-dimensional illusion of a nipple projection (where desired)
The result is a realistic, permanent image that restores visual symmetry - and so much more than that.
Before and after: areola restoration following mastectomy
Who Is It For?
Areola restoration is most commonly sought by women who have undergone:
Single or double mastectomy as part of breast cancer treatment
Prophylactic mastectomy (preventative removal)
Breast reconstruction surgery (implant or flap-based)
Nipple-sparing surgery where pigmentation has been lost
It is also suitable for women who have experienced nipple loss or significant discolouration due to other surgeries or medical conditions.

When Can You Have the Procedure?
Most surgeons recommend waiting at least 12 months after breast reconstruction before undergoing areola tattooing. This allows the skin to fully heal and settle, ensuring the pigment takes evenly and the results are long-lasting.
If you are unsure whether you are ready, a consultation with your surgeon and your paramedical artist together is always the best first step.
What Does the Procedure Involve?
The process begins with a detailed consultation. We look at your skin tone, the colour of your natural or reconstructed breast, your preferences, and - most importantly - what feels right to you.
During the procedure itself:
Custom pigment shades are blended to match your individual colouring
The areola is drawn and shaped to mirror your natural anatomy
Pigment is applied in layers to create depth and realism
The session typically takes 2–3 hours
Most clients require one to two sessions to achieve the final result. Reconstructed skin behaves differently from natural skin, and a follow-up session allows us to refine and perfect the outcome.
The procedure is generally well-tolerated. Reconstructed breast tissue often has reduced sensation, which can make the experience more comfortable than clients expect.
How Long Do the Results Last?
Paramedical areola pigmentation is permanent, though like all tattoos it will soften slightly over time. Most clients return for a colour refresh every 3–5 years to maintain the vibrancy of the result.
Proper aftercare - keeping the area moisturised and protected from sun exposure - helps extend the life of the pigmentation significantly.
More Than Aesthetics
It would be easy to describe areola restoration as a cosmetic procedure. But for the women who choose it, it is rarely about appearance alone.
It is about standing in front of a mirror and seeing yourself - not your diagnosis, not your surgery, not your scars. It is about reclaiming a part of your body that was taken from you. It is about closing a chapter and beginning the next one.
Many clients describe the moment they first see the completed result as unexpectedly emotional. Not because they look “normal” - but because they look like themselves again.
